The mission of the University of Waterloo's Warrior Wrestling Club is to cultivate a culture of excellence, resilience, and integrity both on and off the mat. We are committed to developing student-athletes who strive for greatness in competition, in the classroom, and in the community. Through discipline, teamwork, and relentless pursuit of improvement, we aim to build champions in sport and in life.
Jamie Lopes
Coach
As a troubled teenager, Jamie attended St. Jerome’s High School in Kitchener, channelling his aggression into wrestling. During his four years competing with the Lions, he excelled in local competitions and played a crucial support role at Provincials, Nationals, and OFSAA for the team. Currently, Jamie serves as the president of the Waterloo Region Matmen Wrestling Club, where he manages the daily operations behind the scenes to ensure a robust and enriching program for our athletes. Additionally, as a coaching evaluator for Wrestling Canada, Jamie oversees the development of new coaches, ensuring they possess a solid understanding of the sport and the skills needed to run effective practices.
Gary Bird
Coach
Gary Bird is a charismatic lover of everything wrestling. He was first introduced to wrestling in Grade 7 at Courtland Avenue Public School in Kitchener. After that, the rest is history. Gary has over 25,000 matches under his belt, as both a competitor and a referee. He competed as Provincials, Nationals and OFSAA. He was also hand selected to officiate at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Furthermore, he is a coaching evaluator for Wrestling Canada, and oversees the development of new coaches.
